Native Plants to attract Birds
Any native species that bears fruits, seeds, nuts and attracts insects is a plant to attract birds to your garden. Species that provide their fruits or blooms to attract insects during spring and fall migration provide important nourishment during migration stopovers. Providing cover and habitat to rest, nest and roost are also important functions of plants for birds.

Creating Hummingbird Habitat
Hummingbird Habitat includes nectar-producing flowers that hummingbirds find attractive. Choose plants with flowers having spikes of tubular flowers and easy-to-reach stamens that extend outward beyond the flower opening. If you plan to add non-native plants for hummingbirds, choose non-invasive plants that will not crowd out your native species. We find some of the non-native salvias provide extraordinary appeal for migrating hummingbirds in late summer through fall. These include salvia elegans Pineapple Sage, salvia guaranitica Anise Sage, and salvia leucantha Mexican Bush Sage in our gardens.
Hummingbird Habitat also provides nesting habitat and locations in which hummers can roost and find shelter from the elements. High, dead snags provide favorite perches. A well-designed Hummingbird Habitat also includes several properly maintained feeders (see the link below) and a water element such as a mister in which hummingbirds can bathe. The most effective Hummingbird Habitats attract and nurture tiny insects and spiders that hummingbirds use as sources for fats and proteins. A landscape with a water feature is ideal for providing soft bodied insects. Our favorite information link for hummingbirds: http://www.hummingbirdsplus.org/
